Missouri law requires all CCW classes consist of at least 8 hours of instruction time. Our class typically last 8.5 hours, and if there are a lot of questions from the students, it could last a little longer. Keep in mind, there is no way to truly cover everything you really need to know, in detail, in any one day class.
Class requirements did not change when permit-less carry was enacted |
Lesson 1 Learn the laws relating to obtaining a concealed carry permit, where you can, and can not carry.
Lesson 2 Learn the basic parts of a pistol, how it works, and most importantly, how to safely handle it.
Lesson 3 Learn how to choose a pistol that best suits your needs. One size does not fit all! If you do not already have a pistol that you intend to carry, that is perfect, we'll discuss what features to look for when choosing a gun that best suits your needs, so you don't make the common mistake of buying a gun that looks great, but doesn't fit your lifestyle, hand size, the strength of your grip, etc. We'll also discuss bad choices for reasons that you probably never thought about.
Lesson 4 Learn about ammunition, what types of ammunition are best for self defense, and what criteria used to chose it, then discuss practice ammunition.
This should get us to lunch time. Lunch is 1 hour
Lesson 5 When we get back from lunch you will learn several proven methods for accurately shooting a pistol and get insight into which might work best for you. You will get hands on training with the SIRT laser training pistol, and our computerized LASR target monitoring system. This is an amazing training tool which allows the student to see where they need improvement, before they ever get to the range.
Next comes the fun part....Going to the range, and actually shooting a pistol!
The range is a 2 or 3 minute walk from the classroom. We will spend about about 10 to 15 minutes per student.
Usually each student will shoot individually so that your Instructor can watch closely and offer suggestions to help you shoot better. Never will there be more than two people shooting at the same time. This is one reason our students always leave shooting more accurately than when they started the class.
Lesson 6 We feel this is the most important aspect of this class. We will discuss ways to help reduce the chance of needing to use your pistol, what to do when it becomes clear you are going to have to act, how to respond, what to do during, and immediately after you have used your pistol to defend yourself, including the 911 call, and how to deal with responding police officers. What to expect to happen to your body as a result of the massive dose of adrenaline your body will send into your bloodstream as a result of the most intense fear you have ever endured. Then what to expect in the aftermath, including emotional effects, biological effects, and something most people never realize, the social repercussions that you may find yourself in. There is nothing presented in this class that is intended to scare you away from using a gun to defend yourself or your loved ones, but it is best to be prepared for what is likely to happen. We could easily make this portion of the class a whole day by itself, but we squeeze it into about an hour and a half to two hours by giving you the highlights. This portion of the class really is the most important part, and where your instructor will most earn your respect.
Lesson 7 Will introduce you to the different types of holster available for concealed carry, and how to choose what is best for you under the many circumstances you might encounter, such as what the season, and how you must dress. Again, one size does not fit all, your lifestyle and how you normally dress will dictate what holster design or multiple designs will work best for you.
Lesson 8 How to Clean and Maintain Pistols. If you have never taken your pistol apart to clean it, bring it with you and Keith will show you how.
Class is usually over at 5:30pm but could last until 6pm depending on class size, student needs, and student questions.
We will also discuss why you should still get a permit, even though it is no longer required, and why you should choose to apply for a Missouri permit, even though you do have a few options. Here's just a couple: Your Missouri CCW Permit is recognized by 37 states (Including Missouri). There are 6 of these states that will only recognize your permit if it is from your home state, making a Missouri permit your best choice. Find out what few instructors can tell you about Missouri residents who travel through Illinois. While some states will recognize our class to satisfy their requirements, there is no advantage to getting an out of state permit, but there are some distinct disadvantages.
