CCW Eligibility
If there is something in your history that you are not sure will qualify or disqualify you for a CCW permit, we advise you to contact your sheriff's office, or an attorney.
1) Anyone wishing to obtain a permit to carry a concealed firearm in the State of Missouri must Be at least 19 years old unless they are active duty military, then they can be 18.
You can however, take the class prior to becoming age eligible. There is no expiration date on the training affidavit. But if you are under 18, you will have to get permission from a parent in writing to legally handle a firearm.
2) You have to be a Missouri Resident, and a citizen of the United States, or a legally permanent resident.
3) You can not have any convictions of any crime that could have resulted in a sentence of 1 year or more. You can not have ANY Felony convictions at all, even a suspended imposition of sentence (An SIS does not however, disqualify you from purchasing a Pistol). Juvenile Court convictions in Missouri, normally do not disqualify you for Concealed Carry Permit. See the purple text below from The Attorney General's Office, reply to my question.
"In Missouri, juvenile court actions are not considered convictions except under certain specific circumstances. However, other states may treat juvenile court actions differently and so an out-of-state juvenile court “conviction” my disqualify an applicant from eligibility for a Missouri concealed carry permit."
Scott Sergent, Assistant Attorney General (During the Jay Nixon Administration)
You can not have any conviction of any misdemeanor violent crime within the last 5 years.
You can not currently be charged with a crime, or have a restraining order against you.
Keep in mind, if you have any felony conviction, just putting your finger on a firearm can put you in jail!!!!!!!!!
That's right, the BULL that you hear in the news about it being legal in Missouri for a convicted felon to carry a gun is strictly nonsense.
For the most part, if you can legally walk into a gun shop and purchase a pistol, with a background check, you should be able get a concealed carry permit, with lone exception to that rule being a SIS.
Now that you have the information regarding how you qualify, here are the steps you take:
1) Take the required safety course from an instructor who is authorized by the State of Missouri to teach the class.
2) The instructor will give you an affidavit of training, take that affidavit to your county's sheriff's office.
3) They will collect $100 (Some counties are less). They will then give you a form to fill out.
4) Fill out the form, and give it back to them. It takes about 15 minutes to fill out. The questions are very similar to those asked when you purchase a gun.
5) Now they will fingerprint you.
6) They will inform you that you will receive a letter in the mail telling you that you do, or do not qualify. This must be within 45 days, but is usually just about two or three weeks.
7) Once you receive that letter, you take it back to the same window at your sheriff's office that you applied, and they will issue your permit to you, usually the same day, but they can legally delay giving it to you for up to 3 working days.
8) You are set for the next 5 years. Renewing your permit is even easier, usually it is only one trip to the sheriff for renewal, in and out in about a half hour in most counties.
Note: There are Extended Permits, valid for 10 years, 25 years, or Lifetime. These are not recommended since they are VALID ONLY IN MISSOURI!!! They are not accepted in ANY other state!!!!
